Skype is a popular communication tool. Last week I heard about the use of Skype in organizations. That’s why I visited Skype’s website to search information about this topic. The internet site mentions three important benefits for businesses: save time, save money, and stay ahead. Furthermore, the website mentions the company’s employees will work more productively. Other positive points are that customers can easy reach a company, the communication tool is easy to implement, and the business stays ahead of the game.
The business options of Skype are for instance calling, video, conferencing and data sharing. According to the site, the communication tool could be implemented in all types of businesses: small businesses, home businesses, but also worldwide businesses. Several case studies about the use of Skype are mentioned as well.
After reading the website, I was very enthusiastic about the use of Skype in businesses. I think it’s an economical and efficient way of communicating for many kinds of businesses. Especially for international businesses whose employees travel a lot. Visit Skype’s website and let me know your opinion about the use of Skype in businesses!

Twitter campaign
Social media are becoming more and more important for concerns. Marketing budgets move from traditional to digital channels. Many people are still negative about it, but some companies are very successful in using social media.
An example of a company using social media is Starbucks. This company is active on for instance:
- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/Starbucks
- Twitter: http://twitter.com/starbucks
- Hyves: http://starbucks3.hyves.nl
- Youtube
By means of these sites, Starbucks for instance announces news about the company. They also handle customer issues and complaints, and talk to their customers by means of the social media. On Starbucks’ Youtube channel, advertisements, informative videos and commercials can be watched.
An example of a Starbucks’ social media campaign:
“If your coffee isn’t perfect, we’ll make it over. If it’s still not perfect, you must not be in a Starbucks.” This slogan could be found on advertising posters in cities and newspapers. Starbucks encouraged users to hunt the posters and post photos of them on Twitter. The first people who posted their photos on Twitter won several prizes.
When I heard from the Starbucks campaign, it attracted my attention immediately. The use of social media for marketing purposes is still new, but in my opinion, it can be very effective.

Twitter?
This morning I heard a few people talking about Twitter. "Do you twitter too?", they asked each other. One girl was amazed and asked: "Twitter? What's Twitter?" "Oh no, don’t you know what Twitter is?", the others said.
Twitter is a growing social medium. It is used by people all over the world and gives us an answer to one simple question: what are you doing? Famous artists tell their fans about their daily activities. Fans are able to follow their idols anytime, anywhere. Last week my teacher announced the process of the grading work could be followed on Twitter. Moreover, Twitter was used in the presidential campaign in the U.S. in 2008. Barack Obama used the social network service for publicity.
Twitter has a lot of applications. Not only for people like you and me, but for companies too. It’s possible to keep in touch with your colleagues or to share knowledge with them through Twitter. By means of this medium, you are able to reach people directly. Therefore it’s very useful for asking short questions.
At this moment, only a small part of the consumers has a Twitter account. When this number raises, and many people of a company’s target group use twitter, the social medium could be used for commercial purposes too. For instance for sales (e.g. special offers), branding (e.g. campaigns) or customer service.
In my coming blogs, I will tell you more about the use of social media.
See you soon,
Jeanou.
